Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centres in diamond are atom-scale defects that act as exquisitely sensitive magnetometers at room temperature. That property — sensitivity without cryogenics — makes them practical outside the laboratory, including in vehicles, drones and field instruments.

Applied to biomagnetic detection, NV sensing can pick up the faint magnetic signature of a beating heart through rubble — useful in earthquake rescue or collapsed-structure search. Applied to defence, it discriminates buried ferrous material from background noise without ground contact. In both cases the human remains in the loop: the sensor narrows the search; the operator decides.
